WOMAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA
Woman with a Movie Camera is a platform co-founded by Sofia Varino and Joy Schaefer for (cis/trans/genderqueer) women working in film and video, including mainstream, independent and experimental filmmakers. Directors, technicians, producers, writers and visual artists are all welcome to join and participate, as well as distributors and critics/scholars. We are committed to increasing the visibility of women working in film and video, improving funding and working conditions, and increasing women’s access to film/video equipment, training and education. WMC actively supports cis, trans, and genderqueer women filmmakers because these filmmakers and their films are often ignored by the mainstream, and they are marginalized within avant-garde and academic circles as well.
The films that interest us challenge heterosexism, transphobia, the gender binary, racism, ableism and classism. Our initiatives include an annual screening series, which we launched at Bluestockings feminist bookstore and activist center in New York in June 2014.
