WELCOME

Hello! I am Sofia Varino, a Berlin-based academic working in the field of transdisciplinary gender studies with a focus on queer decolonial ecologies and planetary health. My research and teaching interests cut across environmental and medical humanities, science and technology studies, disability studies, and digital culture. My new book Aquatopia: Climate Interventions (Routledge, 2023), a study of queer decolonial environmental aesthetics co-written with May Joseph, is out now.

NEW BOOK

Aquatopia: Climate Interventions (Routledge, 2023) documents Harmattan Theater’s environmental performances since 2010, tracing our engagements with climate change, colonial histories, and public space in precarious water-bound sites.

Directed by May Joseph (2013)

Far Rockaway was performed by Harmattan Theater on the anniversary of 9/11 in 2013, at Tribute Park, a NYC public park built as a memorial tribute to the over three hundred firefighters who died in the World Trade Center in 2001. The Park was washed away by Hurricane Sandy. Harmattan performed at the Park to mark the onslaught of Hurricane Sandy on the Far Rockaway peninsular, particularly Beach 116, which was entirely destroyed by the storm surge.
